Melanotan (MT2)

MT2 (commonly referred to as Melanotan II) is a synthetic peptide that has been investigated for its potential interactions with melanocortin receptors in the body. Melanotan II (MT-II) is a synthetic analog of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) that acts as a nonselective agonist of melanocortin receptors (MCRs), primarily MC1R, MC3R, and MC4R. Activation of MC1R in melanocytes stimulates tyrosinase activity and eumelanin production, leading to skin pigmentation (tanning) independent of UV exposure. Activation of MC3R and MC4R in the central nervous system modulates energy homeostasis, appetite, and sexual arousal, enhancing libido and sexual behavior via hypothalamic pathways. MT-II also exerts modulatory effects on autonomic and cardiovascular function, including mild increases in blood pressure and heart rate, through peripheral melanocortin receptor signaling. Overall, it influences pigmentation, sexual function, and energy balance via central and peripheral melanocortin receptor activation.
